What we are about

The St. John Debate Program provides students with invaluable experiences. Students learn skills that benefit them throughout their lives that include: Strong Research Skills, Strong Communication Skills, Increased Knowledge about our World, Increased Critical Thinking Skills, Development of Team Work Skills, and Building Educational Connections with other Schools.

The St. John Debate Club was formed in 2006 as an academically oriented club for students to learn and enjoy the science and art of debate. The team has had a great deal of success in its competitions in the Tri-County Area League of Debate Clubs. In 2008, the team took first place in the team competition and continued their success with a second place finish in 2009. Additionally, students have earned scholarships, trophies and medals for their excellence in debate at the individual competition in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Most importantly, the students have learned while having fun! The debate club is coached by Shari and K.C. Baran, who are members of St. John's parish and are both practicing attorneys. Shari & K.C. may be contacted at slbaran@charter.net for more information regarding debate. More information regarding the debate league, including topics, schedules and past champions may be obtained at http://www.tcdebate.org/Judging.htm This league is a 501 (c)(3) organization and all donations are tax deductable.

The team competition consists of four team members on each side. Team competitors follow a similar format to the individual competition, except that there are two constructions and the rebuttals are two minutes each.
